Will Love be Sweeter with “A Second Chance”?

“She loved me at my worst. You had me at my best. At binalewala mo lang lahat yun…And you chose to break my heart.”

Who would forget this heart-wrenching line from the equally unforgettable movie “One More Chance”? The 2007 romantic-drama made its mark in Philippine film history not just with its 152.79M box-office earning but, more importantly, with its relatable plot, quotable quotes, and believable actors.

After 8 years, Star Cinema brings back the beloved characters Popoy and Basha through “A Second Chance.” Still top-billed by John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo and directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina, the sequel will be released on November 25.

The movie follows the married life of Popoy and Basha. With our vivid memories of the tear-jerking “One More Chance,” we know that such life will not be a bed of roses but also a house of cards.

July of this year, Star Cinema confirmed the JLC-Bea reunion movie in the pipeline. Everyone thought a sequel was just wishful thinking until speculations grew further when the novel adaptation of the first movie was released. Then on August 17, a snippet from the movie which was then plainly called “One More Chance Sequel” was released.

It initially showed a separate interview of Popoy and Basha about their married life. Popoy unconvincingly said he’s happy while Basha forced a smile before bowing down. A scene showing the couple arguing ensued, with Popoy yelling at the top of his voice and Basha doing while still doing chores for Popoy. They both snapped and Popoy finally admitted how he is doubting if it was right the they have gotten back together. But he eventually apologized, hugging Basha tightly.

A few months after the internet broke with the fans’ excitement, Star Cinema officially announced the release date and title of the sequel. On October 27, during a special screening of the latest romantic movie from the production outfit, “Everday I Love You,” the teaser for “A Second Chance” was shown.

Scenes from the grand wedding flash as Popoy’s promise is overheard. Yet, in between the clips of smiling faces and joyful celebration are strips of violent arguments and tearful reflections. It is safe to say that this sequel is also a second take on the ugly nitty gritty part of a relationship – this time, the relationship of a married couple.

The fandom, though generally exhilarated, also has apprehension. Some say a sequel is no longer necessary as “One More Chance” has already told one good and whole story. Others are thinking if this meant the characters did learn anything from the first movie. We say, this is the exact reason why we need to watch out for the sequel – to know what changed, what not changed, why everything seemed to happen all over again and how this one will end knowing marriage is a commitment that is hardest to end.

So, to all those who have loved and lost and willing to give “A Second Chance,” see you in theaters on November 25!
