Top International Films of 2015

Comic book heroes, Disney tales, dystopian movie sequels, minions and secret agents, throwbacks or fast-forwards… this year has seen a colorful blend of movies across various genres. At hindi rin natin maitatangi na ito ay taon for “comebacks” – ang pagbabalik ng dinosaurs with “Jurassic World,” ng ating favorite superhero squad with “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” ng speed-loving family with “Furious 7” (minus Paul Walker, though) at ng epic glass shoes with “Cinderella.”

Yet, among these movies – mapa-original, sequel, adaptation o remake man – alin nga ba ang umangat hindi lang sa panlasa ng moviegoers kundi sa pihikang film critics? By combining their ratings, reviews and box office earnings, we have gathered the Top 5 International Films of 2015:

5) The Martian

You’ll never be left behind if you’ve watched this movie on our 5th place, “The Martian.” Based on a novel written by Andy Weir at ikinunsulta pa sa mismong NASA, this movie is considered as the most accurate sci-fi film of our time.

It is not a surprise, then, that this movie is also a box office hit worldwide with a gross total earning of almost $594 million.

4) Carol

Oh, yes, film critics are in love with her and so are we, hence, in the 4th spot is “Carol.” Set in 1950’s New York, “Carol” is an against-all-odds type of love story with many complexities.

3) Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens

The force is strong with our no. 3 as Jedis and Lightsabers return on screen with “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.”

2) Inside Out

Whichever side you look at, “Inside Out” definitely deserves our 2nd place.

This film about the interplay of emotions as a child undergoes change has received both critical acclaim and box-office success.

1) Mad Max: Fury Road

And at our top spot is the crazily beautiful “Mad Max: Fury Road”!

A petrol tanker speeding up the desert, a rock star playing a twin-necked guitar amidst the war, Tom Hardy’s commanding presence, Charlize Theron’s coolness and vulnerability, Nicholas Hoult’s heartwarming change of heart – it is mad art that set this film apart. Isang taong nais lang manatiling buhay ngunit maasahan sa oras ng pangangailangan, isang grupo ng kababaihang matatag na tumalikod sa alam nilang mali, isang pagtutulungang tumapos sa isang malupit na pamumuno – aside from its aesthetics, the underlying themes also made this movie sat well in the box-office and atop film rankings.

And there goes our Top International Films of 2015; indeed, a great year for the film industry. Sa pagsalubong natin sa bagong taon, don’t miss tuning in again to V81 Radio as we tackle the movies you can look forward to in 2016.
